Specialist Service — Concrete Systems

Polished
Concrete

Uganda's most versatile floor finish — raw industrial character or ultra-refined elegance. Five distinct systems, one specialist team that masters them all.

The Concrete Family

One Material. Five Remarkable Systems.

Polished concrete is not a single product — it's a family of related systems that share concrete as their foundation but deliver dramatically different results in terms of aesthetics, texture, colour, durability, and application. Understanding the difference is the key to specifying the right system for your Ugandan project.

Apex Floor Solutions is Uganda's only contractor offering the complete spectrum of concrete floor finishes — from mechanically grinding and polishing the raw structural slab to applying ultra-thin 2mm microtopping overlays, decorative stamped patterns, epoxy resin coatings, and colour hardener finishes. We assess your specific requirements and recommend the optimal system — not just the one we prefer to install.

Whether you want the raw, industrial character of exposed aggregate in a Kampala warehouse, the contemporary seamless polish of a hotel lobby, or the bold pattern of a stamped concrete outdoor terrace — the right concrete system exists for your vision.

Which Polished Concrete
Is Right for You?

Each system has distinct characteristics, costs, and ideal applications. Use this guide to understand the options — then call us for a free consultation.

System 01

Natural / Mechanically Polished Concrete

The real thing — ground from the existing slab

The most authentic form of polished concrete — your actual structural concrete slab is mechanically ground with progressively finer diamond tooling and then polished to the desired sheen level. The result reveals the concrete's natural aggregate and character: each floor is genuinely unique. This is the system favoured for warehouses, showrooms, retail spaces, and contemporary residential projects where exposed material character is part of the design intent.

Reveals authentic concrete character
Extremely durable when properly cured
No added layer — works with existing slab
Grind depth controls aggregate exposure
Sheen levels from matte to mirror polish
Best for: Warehouses, Showrooms, Contemporary Homes, Retail, Industrial Chic Restaurants

Requires a sound, well-cured concrete slab. Not all slabs are suitable — we assess before quoting.

System 02

Microtopping / Microcement Overlay

Ultra-thin overlay — applied over almost any surface

A polymer-modified cementitious coating applied in ultra-thin 2–3mm layers over existing floors, walls, or furniture. Microtopping delivers the look and feel of polished concrete without needing a structural concrete slab — it goes over existing tiles, screed, or wood. This makes it ideal for renovations where full floor replacement isn't practical. The seamless, joint-free surface is its defining quality — available in hundreds of colours and multiple texture levels.

Applied over existing floors — no demolition
Completely seamless — no joints
Hundreds of colour options
Suitable for walls as well as floors
Waterproof when sealed
Best for: Homes, Restaurants, Hotel Rooms, Offices, Bathroom Floors & Walls

Thinner than structural concrete — needs solid, stable substrate. Cannot bridge large cracks.

System 03

Stamped Concrete

Decorative patterns impressed into fresh concrete

Fresh concrete is poured and then impressed with textured stamps replicating natural materials — slate, cobblestone, brick, flagstone, timber. Combined with integral colouring and surface stains, stamped concrete achieves a visual depth that genuinely rivals natural stone at a fraction of the cost. Uganda's tropical climate is well-suited to stamped concrete — no freeze-thaw cycles, no shifting pavers, no weed growth between joints.

Mimics natural stone / brick / timber
Vast pattern and colour library
Extremely durable in Uganda's climate
Slip-resistant finishes available
Indoor and outdoor applications
Best for: Patios, Driveways, Pool Surrounds, Garden Paths, Outdoor Kitchens, Interior Feature Floors

Best on new concrete pours. Existing surfaces can be overlaid with a stamped overlay system.

System 04

Epoxy Resin Floor Coating

Heavy-duty protective coating over concrete

A two-part epoxy resin is applied to a prepared concrete surface, creating a hard, seamless, chemical-resistant finish. Epoxy floors are the gold standard for commercial kitchens, car parks, factories, hospitals, laboratories, and any space where hygiene, chemical resistance, and heavy traffic are primary concerns. Available in a wide range of colours, including anti-slip systems and decorative flake options for visual interest.

Chemical and solvent resistant
Hygienic — non-porous surface
High-gloss or anti-slip finishes
Extremely hard-wearing
Available in multiple colours and systems
Best for: Factory Floors, Commercial Kitchens, Car Parks, Hospitals, Laboratories, Food Processing

Surface preparation is critical. Moisture in the slab must be below threshold before application.

System 05

Grind & Seal

Ground concrete surface sealed for protection and sheen

A practical and cost-effective concrete floor system — the concrete surface is mechanically ground to the desired level (exposing aggregate if desired), then sealed with a penetrating or topical sealer for protection, dust-proofing, and low-level sheen. Grind and seal is faster and more economical than full mechanical polish, making it an excellent choice for large commercial and industrial areas where aesthetics are secondary to function and durability.

Cost-effective for large areas
Dustproof — important for Uganda's dry season
Choice of sealer types and sheen levels
Quick turnaround
Good chemical resistance when properly sealed
Best for: Warehouses, Storage Facilities, Car Parks, Industrial Units, Large Commercial Spaces

Sealer requires periodic reapplication (typically 3–7 years depending on traffic and sealer type).

Why Polished Concrete

Concrete is Uganda's Smartest Floor

In a country with a tropical climate, high construction activity, and a growing design-conscious market, polished concrete is simply the most pragmatic and beautiful choice available.

Built for Uganda's Climate

Concrete is thermally stable — it stays cool in Uganda's hot dry season and doesn't warp or buckle during rains. No other flooring material handles the tropics as gracefully.

Exceptional Durability

A properly finished concrete floor routinely outlasts the building it's in. There is no other flooring material with a comparable lifespan under real-world conditions.

Easy to Maintain

No grout joints, no textured surfaces trapping dirt and bacteria. A sealed concrete floor cleans in seconds — particularly valuable in Uganda's red-dust dry season and muddy wet season.

Works With Natural Light

Polished concrete interacts beautifully with Uganda's abundant natural light — its subtle reflectivity makes spaces feel larger and brighter without artificial illumination.

Sustainable & Local

Polished concrete uses existing material or locally-sourced aggregate — no imported timber, no synthetic fibres. When made from the existing slab, there's zero additional material waste.

Outstanding Value

Across all system types, polished concrete delivers more floor per shilling than almost any alternative — particularly when lifecycle costs are considered. No replacement. Ever.

Common Questions

Polished Concrete FAQs

The questions we're asked most often about polished concrete systems in Uganda.

My slab is already poured — can it still be polished?
In most cases, yes. Whether your slab can be mechanically polished depends on its age, mix design, finishing method, and current condition. We assess every slab before committing to a system. If the slab isn't suitable for mechanical polishing, we typically recommend microtopping, epoxy, or grind-and-seal as alternatives that achieve similar results.
What sheen level can I achieve with polished concrete?
Mechanical polishing delivers sheen levels from completely matte (ground finish) to a high mirror-like reflectivity — described as a "cream" or "salt-and-pepper" finish at lower grits, progressing to a brilliant high-gloss at 3000+ grit. We'll show you physical samples and let you choose exactly the finish you want before we start.
Is polished concrete slippery when wet?
Ground/sealed and lower-sheen finishes provide good grip. High-gloss polished concrete can become slippery when wet — particularly at mirror-polish levels. For wet areas, we specify anti-slip additives in the sealer or recommend a microtopping or epoxy system with a textured topcoat. We always specify the right finish for the function of the space.
Can polished concrete be done in different colours?
Yes — through multiple methods. Integral pigments are added to the concrete mix before pouring. Reactive stains and acid stains penetrate cured concrete to create natural-looking colour variation. Colour hardener creates vibrant surface colour with superior hardness. Microtopping and epoxy systems offer the widest colour range of all.
How do I maintain polished concrete in Uganda?
Dry mop or vacuum daily to remove grit (the primary cause of surface scratching). Wet mop with pH-neutral cleaner weekly. Avoid acidic cleaners. In high-traffic commercial areas, apply a fresh coat of maintenance wax every 3–6 months. Re-seal every 2–5 years depending on traffic and system type. We provide full aftercare guidelines with every installation.
How long does polished concrete installation take?
Mechanical polishing of an existing slab typically takes 3–7 days for a medium-sized space, depending on the starting condition and desired finish level. Microtopping takes 4–6 days. Epoxy 2–4 days. Stamped concrete requires a new pour and takes 5–10 days including cure time. We'll give you a precise schedule with your quote.
